You can reduce the total offsite storage you use by deleting unnecessary files from the server or moving them to areas that are not backed up.
Hunt down and delete obvious crap that is taking up space on the network.
- Manually go through all the files on your network by going to Start > Run and typing \\server
- Look at your online Backup Report, it has LOTS of useful information
- Download and run the program "WinDirStat", which will automatically index your files and show you how your disk space is being used.
- This program can be run on both network and local drives
- After running the program, the graphic blocks at the bottom of the screen represent your files - a big block means a single, big file.
- On the right side, you can also see how much space is being used by filetype. This is useful for seeing what kind of files the majority of your data is.
Put less important files into an area that is not backed up
You can store files onto your Biz Server in specific areas that are not backed up. This is useful if you want to share files with others on the network but are not concerned about potentially losing them (for example, install CD or Printer Drivers)
The following areas on the server are excluded from backup, you can access them by going to Start > Run and then typing the following:
- \\server\notbackedup
- \\server\admin
Free up additional disk space
Although this won't directly affect the amount of offsite backup storage space you use, this will free up valuable disk space that can be better used for storing files or local backups.
- Delete unnecessary files from \\server\notbackedup and \\server\admin
- Every user account automatically gets their own "personal drive" when created. Make sure that users that are no longer valid are deleted, not just disabled. This can be done using Webmin, under System > Users and Groups.
- You can get more disk space by disabling local backups. This is less convenient, but is possible if you desparately need more disk space for regular company files. Contact Us if you wish to do so.
