How to setup Remote Access (OpenVPN)

OpenVPN lets you access the server (or any other networked devices/printers at your office), from anywhere. Creates a "secure tunnel" across the internet back to your server and gives you access just like you were plugged in at your office, the speed mostly depends on the server-side "upload" internet connection speed.

  1. Every user gets a unique "VPN setup package" emailed to them by their Administrator. (a .zip attachment).  Double-click on this email attachment to see the compressed files contained within the .zip file.
  2. Inside the .zip file, double-click and run openvpn-2.1_rc20-install.exe - just stick with the Default choices and hit Next until Finished.

The next steps depend on which Operating System you are on:

Windows 7/Vista:

  1. Copy this text: C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config  (if your version of WIndows is 64-bit, use this: C:\Program Files(x86)\OpenVPN\config) and paste it into the Search box in your Start button, hit Enter
    1. Need help copy/pasting?  To copy/paste just click and drag your mouse over the text to highlight just the bold text, then right-click and choose Copy.
  2. A file window should pop up showing you the contents of the folder, usually only a single ReadMe file inside a folder called "config"
  3. Click on your open .zip file, and select all files except for the openvpn-2.1_rc20-install.exe installer.  Drag those selected files into the file window you opened earlier (the config folder).

Your machine is now configured for Remote Access using OpenVPN!  You should see a "network icon with red-screens" displayed down by your clock (task tray) labelled OpenVPN GUI.  If don't see it running, you might need to start it manually from the shortcut on your Desktop named "OpenVPN GUI". Right-click on it and choose Connect.

You should now be able to click on network drives on the server, print to company printers, etc.

You can get OpenVPN to start automatically by copying it into your Windows Start folder.
