VPN Setup: How to access the server remotely

All RY servers support Microsoft PPTP VPN, which comes built-in with Windows 2000/XP/Vista.

Securely connect to your company network from home or on the road from any Internet connection (dialup/high speed). You can connect and access files just like you were in the office (speed varies depending on Internet speed) using the built-in VPN connection from any Windows PC or Mac.

You will need the following information to set up your VPN connection:

Optionally edit your Hosts file

If you are having problems connecting to your mapped drive (IE. X: or Common Drive) and it works fine when you are in the office but not remotely, you may need to edit your Hosts file.

  1. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories and click on Notepad (in Vista, right-click and choose "Run as Administrator")
  2. Click File > Open
  3. Click the drop-down menu for Files of type: and choose All Files
  4. Open this file: C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the file and insert the following text:
  10.0.50.10 server
  1. Click on File > Save then close Notepad.

Technical notes: - The PPTP VPN clients get IP's from a DHCP pool starting at 10.0.50.200-10.0.50.255, same as the local workstations.
