Preinstallation Checklist
Use the following pre-installation checklist to ensure that your server installation goes as smoothly as possible!
Prior to server installation, the customer should:
- Each user should clean up files in their My Documents. Separate personal from business, business files will be moved to the server.
- Collect all your "tech stuff": software licenses, usernames/passwords for services like your Internet Service Provider (email/web).
- Have a bill/invoice from your Internet Service Provider (IE. Telus/Shaw/Primus)
- If you have a custom domain name (IE. www.xyzcompany.com), you must have the login information to administer it
- Provide a list of all employees (full name, phone, email, role) that will need access to the system. We will create/assign passwords for them unless you specify your own.
Internet
- Customer MUST have high speed internet!
- If Telus, you MUST provide login info to log in to http://registerdevice.telus.net
- Static IP is required for Scalix Groupware / hosting email on server
Email/Web hosting
We provide web/email hosting as part of the customers' server subscription. We also provide outside DNS hosting, email backup (buffer).
- If the customer already has a custom domain, we recommend changing their domain name registration to point to our nameservers. We cannot provide email backup without being the primary NS.
- We strongly recommend documenting all domain info in the Technical Support Support system
Network/Hardware checklist
- Is there an existing firewall / router (including wireless)?
- Generally, the Biz Server should be the firewall.
- Ensure you have login info for router (to check for existing port forwards or special configs), or the router will need to be reset to factory defaults.
- We should be the primary firewall, otherwise the following ports must be forwarded:
-
- 80 - web server
- 22 - Secure shell for remote maintenance and backups
- 21 - FTP access to server
- 1723 - PPTP VPN (router must be able to handle GRE routing for this to work, not all Linksys/Dlink's properly support
- Are there any printers/copiers/network devices that require/have IP addresses? Ideally, all PC's/devices should be setup using DHCP, with static IP's controlled by the DHCP server.
- Is there enough free ports on existing network switch/hub/panel to accommodate new server/connections?
- Is a UPS installed? Does it big enough to support the new server/equipment? (>750va recommended)
After that..
- Agree upon a folder structure that you can use company wide (IE. Customers, Sales, Marketing, Accounting) so you can move
